Did you know?
Did you know there are Afrobeat bands in South America? Yes, you read right. South Americans playing Afrobeat music. They were inspired by the works of Fela Kuti and Tony Allen. They sing in Portuguese/Spanish/native dialect, some speak some Yoruba words as well. Their music is really enjoyable as they mix some native sound with Afrobeat. Here’s a list of some of my favourite bands:
-
Abayomy Afrobeat Orquestra (I really recommend their self titled album, Eru and Obatala are my favourite)
-
Newen Afrobeat
-
Tragavenao Orquestra Afrobeat
-
LA BAO
-
The Souljazz Orquestra
PS: Tony Allen worked with Abayomy on his Afrobeat Revolution album, there’s a song titled Meus Filhos (My Children) featuring BNegao and Abayomy Afrobeat Orquestra. I hope you enjoy the songs.
Quite revealing.
