Como manager Cesc Fabregas wants to sign Alfie Gilchrist on loan from Chelsea
Cesc Fabregas, head coach of newly promoted Serie A team Como, wants to sign Chelsea youngster Alfie Gilchrist on loan. The Spanish manager, who was earlier the assistant manager of Como, led them to Serie A promotion last season.
He was subsequently made the manager of the Italian team, and now, according to The Athletic via Metro, he wants to bring Alfie Gilchrist on loan to the Italian club. Gilchrist enjoyed an impressive debut first-team campaign last term.
Following an avalanche of injuries to first-team players, then-manager Mauricio Pochettino provided some opportunities to academy players. One of them was Gilchrist, who rose among others and made a decent impact. He made 19 appearances in all competitions, operating as a centre-back and fullback.
His performances helped him earn cult hero status due to his committed and combative displays, which were rewarded with Chelsea’s Academy Player of the Year award. Former Blues midfielder Fabregas appears to have assessed Gilchrist’s time at Chelsea and seems impressed with his performance. This move will present the 20-year-old with a fair chance to play more minutes on the pitch.
Remaining at Chelsea next season could be challenging because the Blues boast the likes of Levi Colwill, Benoit Badiashile, Tosin Adarabioyo, Trevoh Chalobah, and Wesley Fofana. Thus, getting first-team minutes will be complicated, and a temporary move to a Serie A club will be a sensible decision where he will develop into a seasoned defender.
Serie A is one of the best leagues, and we have already seen other Blues players such as Christian Pulisic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek thrive there. Therefore, it will be a wise opportunity for Gilchrist to try his hand in a different league. When the Blues feel he is ready, he will be integrated into the first team.
