Cervical cancer kills 28 Nigerian women daily’

The founder of Breast Without Spot Foundation, Prof. Ifeoma Okoye, says cervical cancer kills between 23 and 28  women daily in Nigeria.

Okoye made this known during the Goodway Foundation outreach in partnership with Breast Without Spot Foundation, held on Monday in the Ikotun area of Lagos.

She advocated routine examinations to stem the mortality rate from cancer.

She said, “It has been observed that healthcare professionals often face challenges when many patients seek medical attention in advanced stages of the disease.  This can place a substantial burden on the healthcare infrastructure, result in high costs, and potentially diminish the patients’ determination to fight for survival.

“Cervical cancer kills 23-28 Nigerian women daily. Hence, by conducting routine examinations of the breast and genital areas, it is possible to reduce the risk of developing cancers like breast cancer and cervical cancer, as well as various other forms of cancer that may affect the body.”

According to her, women are ashamed of the stigma and fear of being left by their husbands, hence, they often hide their condition even from potential solution providers.

Okoye, however, harped on the need for quality nutrition to help the body mount up the needed resistance, adding that women must shun alcohol and tobacco.

Also,  the Chief Executive Officer of the Goodway Foundation, Chioma Ikoku, noted that over 70,000 people die from cancer in Nigeria.

She solicited for partnerships to be able to spread the cancer campaign.
