Addressing insecurity in Nigeria – Tribune Online

Gone are the days when Nigeria was a citadel of peace among African countries. In recent times, things have changed drastically, as epitomised by the situation in Plateau State where many innocent people have continually lost their lives. Insecurity in Nigeria has negatively affected many things. Kidnapping reigns in Abuja, the seat of power, and indeed there is no place that can be considered safe anymore!

Villages are no longer safe to spend holidays in as it used to be when we were growing up in those days. Nowadays, the perpetrators of evil are now taking refuge in most of the remote areas for criminal activities.  Insecurity has negatively affected the educational system because of the incessant kidnapping of students when they are traveling for the National Youth Corps Service Corps (NYSC) orientation programmes across the country. Foreign investors are closing their businesses in Nigeria as a result of incessant kidnapping and poor economy.

The Federal Government is counting its losses on a daily basis as there is inadequate security in most of the oil-producing communities in the country. Petroleum pipelines are being vandalised on a daily basis because of insecurity.

Acts of vandalism will continue until the government provides adequate security in the oil and gas sector. The fact is that the people who are disturbing the peace of this nation are infinitesimal in proportion to the rest of us.  As a matter of urgency, the Federal Government should endeavour to work on the insecurity this year.
