November 14, (THEWILL) – Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, have officially qualified for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament following a crucial 1-0 victory for Libya over Rwanda on Thursday. This result ensured Nigeria’s position in the tournament, as they now have a guaranteed top-two finish in Group D of the qualifiers.
The decisive moment in the match occurred late in the game when Fahd Al-Mesmary scored the only goal in the 84th minute, silencing the home crowd at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali. This result eliminated Rwanda from contention for qualification, as they can no longer reach Nigeria’s current point total of 10, even if they win their remaining matches.
Nigeria’s qualification is another achievement for the team, which has a rich history in the AFCON, having won the tournament three times. The Super Eagles finished as runners-up in the most recent edition of the tournament earlier this year. Their performances in the qualifiers makes them one of the consistent teams in contention for the 2025 trophy.
That edition of the AFCON tournament is set to take place from December 21 to January 18, next year in Morocco. With Nigeria now qualified, they join other nations such as Morocco, Algeria, and Senegal, who have also secured their places in the tournament.
Nigeria’s upcoming match against Benin will serve as an opportunity for the Super Eagles to fine-tune their squad ahead of the tournament.
