Mum transforms former council house
A mum has transformed her 1920s former council house into a “dream” family home. Jennifer Kay, 40, bought her three-bed semi-detached property in Garston in 2008. It was the first home she ever bought and she is now in the process of transforming it into her family’s forever home.
Jennifer, from Garston, bought her home four years before she married her now husband, Rob Kay. The couple first met when they were 16, but drifted apart before rekindling on holiday with friends when they were 21. The couple now have two children, aged nine and four.
Despite outgrowing their family home the couple “loved” the location too much to move and two years ago decided to take on the huge challenge of a refurb. Jennifer told the ECHO: “We started in 2022 and have added an extension on the back and side. It’s an upstairs and downstairs extension. My house is in total disarray at the moment.

“The extension is on the kitchen and we’ve added a dining room snug area, shower room and toilet. We’ve extended the master bedroom – it’s not huge but it has made such a difference to the way we live. We’re turning it into my perfect family home.”
Jennifer has her own interior design business, The Mini Interior Design Company, which she describes as a “digital Pinterest board” with a “designer who you can consult with.”
With that in mind you can imagine how beautiful the refurb on their former council house is going to look. Some of the touches she has already made on the home are super stylish, including a shower room of dreams.
So far, the mum-of-two has completed their shower room and started on the kitchen but it’s already clear to see how sleek and elegant the finished home will be when it is finished. The mum is blogging the process on her Instagram account, which you can follow here.
Jennifer says: “I’m excited for it to be finished, I feel like we’re living in squalor, there are clothes and things everywhere. But I can see in my mind how it’s going to look.”
