Gunmen target Ramadan food donations in Zamfara, kill two

In a brazen assault on humanitarian efforts, terrorists launched attacks on villages in Zamfara State, northwest Nigeria, targeting food items recently donated for Ramadan.

The attacks, which occurred on March 20th in the communities of Ruwan-Bore and Gidan-Zuma, followed donations from a former governor and Senator Abdulaziz Yari aimed at supporting residents during the holy month.

According to eyewitnesses, the terrorists stormed Gidan-Zuma at around 11:30 pm, firing shots and demanding villagers surrender “Ramadan relief aid.” The attack resulted in the burning of four houses and seven shops.

The previous night, a similar raid struck Ruwan-Bore. Gunmen targeted mud houses and looted food donations before fleeing.

Local residents attempted to defend their communities, but were ultimately overpowered by the larger terrorist group. Two members of the Community Protection Guards, Aliyu Abubakar and Barkono Musa, were tragically killed.

Victims also reported a lack of response from security forces. Residents claim they contacted the Zamfara State Police Command for assistance, but received no response.

The Zamfara State Government, however, maintains that security forces were deployed and engaged the attackers. The Police Public Relations Officer stated they were gathering information to confirm the incident.

These attacks highlight the worsening security situation in Zamfara and the vulnerability of residents. The looting of food aid further threatens an already struggling population, particularly during Ramadan, a time of heightened need.
