A heroic 60-point effort from Steph Curry went to waste in the Golden State Warriors’ overtime 141-134 loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday night.
Curry was two points shy of his career high, set in 2021 against the Portland Trail Blazers. He shot 22-for-38 from the field and 10-for-23 from 3 in the loss, Golden State falling to a 21-25 record. The Warriors move to 1-4 in overtime games this season.
With the Warriors on the end of a back-to-back, Curry had to kick into another gear with an energy infusion from the fresh-legged bench denizens to keep the team on pace.
Curry went on a flurry late in the fourth quarter, scoring 18 points in the final seven minutes of the frame. His 22 total fourth-quarter points are the most he’s scored in a fourth quarter in his career. His driving floater gave the Warriors a two-point lead with 14 seconds remaining, but Dejounte Murray tied it with a floater and Curry missed the game-winning shot to send it to overtime.
The Warriors lost their best wing defenders on the way to overtime. Jonathan Kuminga fouled out late in the fourth quarter and Andrew Wiggins came up hobbling on his left ankle late in the first half and was ruled out for the rest of the game. The Warriors started overtime with Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, Lester Quinones and Brandin Podziemski. The Hawks went on a 9-0 run to put it away.
Quinones played extended minutes with Dario Saric out a second game due to illness and put up 17 points shooting 6-for-11 from the field. Podziemski had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. His five double-doubles this year trails only San Antonio’s Victor Wembanyama (23), Oklahoma City’s Chet Holmgren (13), and Dallas’ Dereck Lively (8) in rookie double-doubles this season.
Thompson, still coming off an illness, struggled. He had 10 points shooting 4-for-19 from the field. Kuminga snapped his 20-point game streak at eight games with a 16-point effort shooting 6-for-12 from the field.
Next up for the Warriors is a trip to Brooklyn to face the Nets on Monday followed by a back-to-back against the Philadelphia 76ers and Indiana Pacers on Wednesday and Thursday, the NBA trade deadline.
