Sudden twist could deal Real Madrid a huge Alphonso Davies transfer blow

Real Madrid have been closely linked to a move for Bayern Munich star left back Alphonso Davies, who remains the consensus best player at the position in world football.

Los Blancos have been looking for a new left back for a couple of seasons now. This past summer, they brought Fran García back from Rayo Vallecano to compete with Ferland Mendy, but his start to life in Madrid has been far from ideal.

Clearly, Real Madrid need a top-class left back. Mendy hasn’t been getting the job done since a successful first season in 2019/20, while García may not be of the caliber required to start for the Merengues every week.

Davies is seen as the ideal replacement from the perspective of both fans and Juni Calafat, and while there is a great deal of optimism he can join this summer, a transfer remains far from a guarantee.

Bayern are set to pay Alphonso Davies more than Real Madrid

Now, The Athletic’s David Ornstein reports that Bayern’s latest contract offer to Alphonso Davies is better than Real’s, and the Canadian star is expected to remain in Bavaria, barring another change in circumstances.

That change would likely be Real Madrid increasing their offer, though it could also be Bayern’s rescinding theirs. That is not an impossibility, given Thomas Tuchel’s volatile nature and the rumors the club is dissatisfied with his performances this season.

Everything around the Davies situation feels like theater. His agent is using the media to try and get Bayern to pay his client more, while Bayern are using the media to put pressure on Davies to re-sign.

In 2022, there were rumors Serge Gnabry could join Real Madrid to solve their long-running right wing issue, but the German international elected to stay with Die Roten in the end, signing a contract above what anyone expected.

Davies could have the same fate, especially since Gnabry had to deal with the same internal criticisms before signing a juicy contract. Given left backs are scarcer, Davies has additional leverage to get serious dough from Bayern.
