A Lagos University Teaching Hospital medical doctor, Umoh Michael has died after performing a 72-hour marathon surgery at the neurosurgery unit.
The Association of Resident Doctors on Tuesday, in a protest letter titled ‘An Appeal By The House Officers Of LUTH’, and addressed to the chief medical director, expressed their deep grief over their colleague’s death.
The doctors also accused their senior colleagues of bullying, and not providing feeding and good accommodation.
“Over the loss of our colleague, a co-House officer, Dr Umoh Michael, who died after having a 72hrs call in Neurosurgery Unit on September, 17th 2023, we the house officers are in deep grief.
“Dr Michael was on a 72hrs call before arriving home on Sunday morning at 3am to get set for church service, reaching his worship center (United Evangelical Church) where he slumped in the church at about 11am.
“His roommate attested that Umoh Michael barely slept over the past one week in their apartment as he was always on call.
“The compulsory House check at the beginning of House jobs should be free for House officers. The registers and registrars should make the work environmentally more friendly for us. We shouldn’t do the work of potters, patient relatives or nurses,” the doctors wrote.
