Brief Biography of Bongos Ikwue

Bongos Ikwue (born 1942) is a Nigerian musician, songwriter and record producer, best known for his work in the 1970s with his band, the Groovies, and for his 1976 album, “Africa Will Survive”.

Ikwue was born in Otukpo, Benue State, Nigeria. He began his musical career in the 1960s, playing guitar and singing in local bands. In 1970, he formed the Groovies, a funk and soul band that became one of the most popular bands in Nigeria. The Groovies released several albums, including “The Groovies” (1971), “The Groovies II” (1972), and “The Groovies III” (1973).

In 1976, Ikwue released his solo album, “Africa Will Survive”. The album was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to popularize African music around the world. The album’s title track, “Africa Will Survive”, became an anthem for the continent, and it is still considered one of the most important African songs of all time.

Ikwue continued to release albums throughout the 1970s and 1980s. He also worked as a record producer, producing albums for other Nigerian artists, such as Fela Kuti and King Sunny Adé.

In the 1990s, Ikwue retired from music and moved to the United States. He currently lives in New York City, where he continues to write and record music.
