Evidence cited by neuropsychologist Dr Álvaro Bilbao, children under the age of six should not have access to smartphones, tablets, or computers. Using these devices can make them more irritable and worsen their concentration and memories compared to children who do not use them. Bilbao urges parents to ban devices with screens for young children and advises that the screens should gradually find their way into their hands once they have developed emotionally and improved their ability to control themselves, which typically occurs from the age of six.
Studies indicate that children who regularly stare at screens are more likely to develop behavioral problems or childhood depression. They may also become unhealthily dependent on devices with screens and lose interest in other activities that are more beneficial to their development, according to the new book. Bilbao, who trained at Johns Hopkins Hospital in the US, says that he does not have any apps for children on his mobile phone or tablet. He occasionally allows his children to use the mobile phone to look through photos or learn dance moves from songs, but they do not play games. Bilbao also limits their time in front of the television.
The World Health Organization recommends that children under the age of five should have no more than an hour a day of screen time and advises a total ban on screens for children under the age of two.
