Frank Lampard Defends Chelsea Owner Amid Criticism Over Troubled Reign

Frank Lampard has defended Chelsea owner Todd Boehly, stating that he has “good intentions” despite the growing criticism of his tenure. Boehly has spent over £550 million ($695 million) on new signings since buying the club from Roman Abramovich last year, but the team has had its worst season for decades despite this record-breaking investment. Lampard’s side is currently on a woeful run of six consecutive defeats since he replaced sacked manager Graham Potter. Chelsea has been in crisis mode since Thomas Tuchel’s shock dismissal last September, with another defeat at Bournemouth potentially leading to their lowest Premier League finish in 29 years.

Chelsea fans have been seen shouting abuse at Boehly during matches, and Abramovich’s name was chanted by supporters during the midweek defeat at Arsenal. Boehly was also criticized for delivering a speech to the players in the dressing room after Chelsea’s loss to Brighton that reportedly called their season “embarrassing”. Despite the toxic atmosphere around the club, Lampard believes that Boehly and fellow owner Behdad Eghbali can prove effective in the long term.

Lampard is adamant that the owners have good intentions and is supportive of Boehly’s recent claim that he is confident he can get Chelsea back on track. He stated, “It’s up to the owners of the club to take those bigger decisions. It’s not for me to talk about a vision for the club. I’m here until the end of the season.”

The team has struggled significantly, and former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino is believed to be close to agreeing to become Chelsea’s latest manager. The club is currently 12th-placed in the Premier League and facing their first season without European competition since 2016-17, with only two misses in 26 years.

Lampard acknowledged that an overhaul of the struggling squad is on the cards in the close-season, saying, “Will we need a reboot of some sense in the summer? Sure. That’s clear because we’re not where we want to be.” Despite not all fans wanting to hear it, Lampard says that the reality is that “the action this season is not going to get us in the Champions League or in the top eight.”

Lampard is the worst coach ever appointed by Chelsea. I just hope they don’t get relegated this season.
