First, i need to let you know that i am a Nigerian and i am proud to be one despite the negative image some bad elements have given the country in the world.
Recently a Ghanaian colleague in United Kingdom asked me ”Is Nigeria still the giant of Africa?”. He said that title is no more applicable to Nigeria because other African nations have overtaken Nigeria in technological developments and advancement. Then i made him realise that up till date Nigeria still remains the giant of Africa and it will remain so for many years to come despite its many challenges. I then explained to him citing some reasons:
1. Population: With over 216 Million according to a source, which i showed him online as at the time of our discussion, there is no other country in Africa with such number of citizens.
2. Entertainment: I made him realise that Nigeria is like entertainment headquarter of Africa. For an entertainer to quickly burst into limelight he/she should first try to be accepted by Nigeria audience, listeners and promoters. I made him realise all the music of Burna Boy, Wizkid, Olamide etc he has been playing is an evidence as i have never seen him playing other African music other than that of Nigerian musicians.
3. Political/Military power and influence: Nigeria remains the giant when it comes to African and world politics at large. I made him realise how Nigeria stood against apartheid in South Africa and funded the struggle against colonialism, i also cited how Nigeria has been behind peace keeping in other west Africa countries.
4. Wealth and Natural Resources: Because of the first reason above and the fact that God has blessed Nigeria with abundant natural resources is an indication that the nation is still giant of Africa. I made him realise that other African nationalities from Gambia, Mali etc are having mining business in Nigeria and in most cases they are illegal miners. Before we parted, i asked him ‘Is there any country in Africa that can match Nigeria in the above reasons?’, ‘Is there any country in Africa that its money and natural minerals can be stolen like in Nigeria and such country will still exist’?
