Why do Jehovah’s witnesses abstain from Blood?

Jehovah's witnesses do not take blood regardless of the critical health situation and danger they are. I have heard stories of some of them dying as a result of non-blood issue. I am of the opinion that there is nothing bad in taking blood at least to save one's life. But these people, i dont understand why risking their lives. Do you?
