Kalvin Phillips has joined Sheffield United after being frozen out at Manchester City this season.
Sheffield United sealed a loan deal for Phillips before the transfer window closed on 2 February.
The 30-year-old has featured just once off the bench for Man City this season in the Carabao Cup, while he’s spent time on loan at West Ham and Ipswich Town in the previous two campaigns.
Phillips impressed on his Sheffield United debut against Middlesbrough on Monday (9 February), where he came off the bench in the second half at Bramall Lane.
However, Chris Wilder’s side suffered a 2-1 defeat against the new Championship leaders, with fellow new signing Joe Rothwell receiving a red card for a rash challenge.
How Man City could have structured Kalvin Phillips deal
Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Pep Guardiola’s side will be paying the majority of Phillips’s wages during his time at Sheffield United.
The midfielder joined the Manchester giants in a £45million deal from Leeds United in the summer of 2022.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Phillips’s wages, Borson said: “I think City will be paying the vast majority. Let’s say he’s on £150,000, Sheffield United could pay £50k, but it’s not straightforward.
“You’re getting a player who’s spent the last three years maybe on loan and unfortunately hasn’t really performed or has been injured. Even if it’s £50k for six months, that’s still a lot of money. It’s still over £1m.
“His agent has gone around to find a club relatively close by, maybe where he can play in the first team, and get some exposure in order that they can find a club for him in the summer.”
What Man City are hoping for after agreeing Phillips loan deal
Borson revealed Man City will be hoping Phillips catches the eye at Sheffield United to be able to move him on permanently this summer.
“The idea would be, ‘Can we find him a club where City can effectively get out of having to pay another year of wages at £150k a week’,” said Borson.
“I mean, that’s the target. That’s the target for the player, and it’s the target for City.

“Sheffield United are facilitating that, and in order to facilitate it, I would think they’ve been quite heavily incentivised with a very low contribution.”
Phillips has played just 32 times for Man City since joining Guardiola’s side three-and-a-half years ago.
