The FA have released a statement ahead of next month’s third round ties – and there has been a major change to how VAR will be deployed in the competition.
The Football Association has announced a significant change to the FA Cup, introducing Video Assistant Referees (VAR) from the fifth round onwards. This decision aims to ensure consistency in refereeing for all clubs at the same stage of the world-famous competition – which continues with the third round next month.
Previously, VAR was only used for games at Wembley Stadium and Premier League grounds due to infrastructure and cost requirements. A statement explained: “Video Assistant Referees (VAR) will only be used in the 2024/2025 Emirates FA Cup from the fifth round onwards.”
“It has been agreed that VAR will be utilised for every match in the fifth round of the competition through to the final at Wembley Stadium, and will not be in operation for the third and fourth rounds. VAR has only been used in the Emirates FA Cup previously for matches at Wembley Stadium – and at Premier League grounds – owing to the infrastructure, workforce and costs that are required for its operation.”

“This decision ensures that there is a consistent refereeing approach for all clubs taking part in the same stage of the competition.” Football fans across the country have voiced their frustration over the decision to exclude VAR from the competition, with many calling for its complete removal.
The much-maligned technology has been a contentious issue in the Premier League since its introduction for the 2019/2020 season. As we approach this season’s third round, meanwhile, Merseyside teams Liverpool and Everton are among those in action.
They have been pitted against Accrington Stanley and Peterborough respectively in the third around. Despite the ties seeing them both have home advantage, VAR will not be in operation at that stage.
