His Royal Highness, the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, has underscored the need for actions to be taken by Nigerians with a view to placing national interest above sectional and personal interests.
Achebe who metaphorically likened Nigeria to a cow, said if the citizens continued to milk it for sectional and personal interests, the cow would be milked to death.
The monarch who spoke Monday at the launching of a book ‘Bold Leap’, the autobiography of a former journalist turned politician, Senator Chris Anyanwu, said Nigeria needed leaders like Senator Chris Anyanwu who courageously and resolutely fights for a course she believed in.
“In this country, since independence, we’ve been talking and talking and talking and talking and talking.
“I think it’s time we began to think about doing something, because we have two alternatives. Keep milking the cow until it dies, because of our sectional interests, which we tend to protect, and our personal interests. People go into public service, not to serve the public, but to serve their own interests.
“Either we keep doing that and milk the cow to death, or we do the opposite and place Nigeria above everything else.
“And I would like to add that time is not too much in our favour. It’s either we milk the cow to death very, very fast, or we can turn around the country very, very fast.”
