NCC introduces new licensing framework for A2P services

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has launched a new Licensing Framework for Application-to-Person (A2P) services, aimed at strengthening the structure and transparency within the country’s telecommunications industry.

The announcement, made on Friday by Reuben Muoka, NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, outlines the Commission’s strategic plan to regulate A2P services, ensuring smoother, more efficient, and lawful business-to-customer communications in Nigeria.

The framework, accessible on the NCC’s official website, was developed under the provisions of the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) of 2003.

A2P services, which are widely used for automated business communications such as alerts, notifications, and promotional messages, play a vital role in enhancing customer engagement and operational efficiency for businesses across various sectors.

By implementing this new licensing framework, the NCC aims to create a more regulated and transparent ecosystem for A2P services, ensuring a seamless delivery of these messages while protecting both service providers and consumers.

The initiative seeks to address key issues such as service integrity and compliance with industry standards, while also improving the overall functioning of telecommunications operations in Nigeria.

A spokesperson for the NCC emphasized the significance of the framework, stating, “The A2P framework is a critical step toward ensuring a regulated, dynamic telecommunications sector that meets the needs of businesses and consumers alike. We are eager to receive input from all stakeholders to fine-tune this effort.”

The new framework comes as part of the NCC’s broader goal to align Nigeria’s telecom sector with international regulatory standards, ensuring that it continues to evolve and meet the growing demands of the market while adhering to global best practices.

To facilitate stakeholder engagement, the NCC has scheduled a virtual forum on December 20, 2024, where industry players can discuss the framework, offer feedback, and seek clarification.

Additionally, stakeholders are encouraged to submit their comments and suggestions via email by December 19, 2024, at [email protected] and [email protected].

This initiative further underscores the NCC’s commitment to governance, compliance, and service excellence within Nigeria’s telecom sector. By fostering an environment of transparency and accountability, the Commission aims to promote sustainable growth while safeguarding the interests of both businesses and consumers in the country’s rapidly evolving digital economy.
