Deciding where to see the total solar eclipse in New York is difficult when there are so many spectacular options. The path of totality—just 110 miles wide—crosses the state’s northwest, home to the vast minority of New York’s 20 million people.
It’s the state’s first for 99 years, but it won’t just be New Yorkers that head to these places. For eclipse chasers in Boston, Philadephia, Pittsburgh and Wahington D.C. the “Empire State” is the natural place to head to.
“New York is such a fantastic place and so unusual for the eclipse,” said Dr. Tyler Nordgren, an Ithaca, New York-based astronomer, author of Sun Moon Earth and eclipse artist at Space Art Travel Bureau, in an interview. “There is a huge variety of utterly iconic and distinctly different locations to go, from Niagara Falls, Adirondacks, Finger Lakes wine region, Letchworth State Park—the “Grand Canyon of the East”—the Erie Canal, Rochester and Buffalo.”
