It is time to get organized. A total solar eclipse is coming to North America, and on April 8 it will pay to wake up within the 115 miles wide path of totality. Hotels are still availableâas well as all kinds of luxury optionsâbut prices are rising fast as demand surges.
Itâs the same story for campsites, with private ranches and farms across most of 15 U.S. states crossed by the eclipse already offering high priced places to pitch up. There are severals places to find a private campsiteâincluding dedicated eclipse-related search engines on Hipcamp and Campspot, with National Eclipseâs Eclipse Lodging & Camping also a great resource.
Now Kampgrounds of America has joined the fray, announcing availability for no fewer than 24 properties up and down the path of totality.
Secure Your Spot
âWe have several KOA locations on the path of totality that are still available for booking on our website,â said Diane Eichler, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Kampgrounds of America, Inc. in en email. âAvailability is limited, so we advise making reservations soon to secure your spot for a solar eclipse viewing of a lifetime.â
Camping isnât for everyoneâparticularly in Aprilâand even a casual search wil reveal that most private campgrounds are in the more southerley states of Texas and Arkansas. âOur KOA locations in the northern U.S. and Canada on the path of totality may encounter cooler weather,â said Eichler, who recommends campers dress in layers, pack insulated sleeping gear and stay hydrated. âCamping during brisk seasons can be a delightful experience with proper preparation, and our campground staff are always ready to assist with any needs or advice,â she said.
Here are 26 KOA campgrounds that still have availability for April 8, according to KOA:
Arkansas
Illinois
Indiana
New York
Ohio
Texas
Note: the location within the path of totality for these campgrounds was confirmed using Xavier Jubierâs eclipse chaser-standard Interactive Google Map, as was the duration of totality.
Path Of Totality
On April 8, the moon will be close enough to Earth to appear 5.6% larger than the sun, casting a shadow that will move across the planet at about 1,500 mph. This path of totality will cross parts of five states in Mexico (Sinaloa, Nayarit, Durango, Coahuila and Chihuahua), 15 U.S. states (Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine) and seven Canadian Provinces (Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland).
Wishing you wide eyes and clear skies
