2024/25 Premier League Team of the Season at the midway point

Understandably, the 2024/25 Premier League Team of the Season at the midway point is dominated by a dominant Liverpool, but which other big clubs landed multiple players in this XI?

Liverpool have been dominating the 2024/25 Premier League season thus far with a six-point lead over second-placed Arsenal – and a game in hand – as new manager Arne Slot has taken the Reds to new heights after Jurgen Klopp brought them back to contention status last season.

So the Liverpool players will predictably dominate a best XI made up of Premier League players to this point in the season, but there are other clubs in the top four – and even outside the traditional contenders – who populate a team comprising the best of the best in the English top flight.

Here is a 4-3-3, with a classy No. 10 included, of the  2024/25 Premier League Team of the Season at the midway point. Liverpool had multiple entries, but which other top clubs had more than one star make the cut?

GK David Raya, Arsenal

David Raya is a phenomenal goalkeeper, and while he was always a good shot-stopper from his days with Brentford, he’s reached a new level at Arsenal, stepping up to the level that the Gunners expect as title contenders.

While Arsenal have fallen behind in the title race to a resurgent Liverpool under Arne Slot, Raya has been the third-best player on the team after Bukayo Saka and William Saliba, ranking in the top five in save percentage, goals allowed per 90, and clean sheet percentage.

LB Antonee Robinson, Fulham

It’s been lovely to see Antonee Robinson getting his flowers for a Fulham side that is threatening for European football again, and in light of Christian Pulisic’s recent downturn in form, I’d wager that Robinson has been the best USMNT player of the European campaign thus far.

Robinson has a case for being the best defensive left back in the world right now, and he’s everything that Carlo Ancelotti evidently thinks that Ferland Mendy is at left back – including the fact that Robinson is actually competent on the offensive end.

With 2.8 tackles, 1.9 interceptions, and 3.2 clearances per game, Robinson has been a monster on the defensive end, and his work rate has translated well on the other side of the ball with 1.3 dribbles completed per game.

But the most impressive statistic is Robinson’s seven assists, ranking him among the best playmakers at any position in the Premier League, let alone coming from a left back who defends as well as he does.

CB Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool

Virgil van Dijk has unquestionably been the best defender of the current Premier League campaign, and it’s no coincidence that Liverpool’s improvement in play over the last two seasons has come with the Dutchman’s own rebound after a very uncharacteristic 2022/23 season.

A shutdown center back in every sense, Van Dijk has now unequivocally become the center back by which all other players at the position, in any league, are compared to.

CB William Saliba, Arsenal

William Saliba is almost impossible to beat one-on-one with a rare set of athletic traits that are not matched by anyone else at the position. The Frenchman has the speed, strength, and high football IQ all blended in a center back who is very comfortable with any scheme of marking responsibilities.

Adept with the ball at his feet, Saliba is the crown jewel of an Arsenal defense that is littered with quality footballers, but there’s something unique about Saliba’s mix of power and grace that is particularly irresistible.

RB Trent Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool

If, as Diario AS reports, Trent Alexander-Arnold is on the precipice of a move to Real Madrid, then what a way to say goodbye to Liverpool, Now, I personally still find it difficult to believe that he is about to betray the Reds as a fine homegrown talent playing for a team that has been significantly better than Real this season, but, well, who am I to doubt the pull of the Bernabeu?

Alexander-Arnold, like Van Dijk, has returned to his best level for Liverpool these past two seasons, and he has been the best right back in the world so far in the 2024/25 campaign, in juxtaposition to declining partner Andrew Robertson on the left.

CM Ryan Gravenberch, Liverpool

One of the best players of the season at any position, Ryan Gravenberch is one of the biggest reasons why Liverpool have broken out as the best team in the Premier League this campaign, bar none.

It’s amazing to think that Gravenberch had no role at Bayern Munich and then no role with Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool before fulfilling the potential he showed the world three years ago at Ajax, albeit in a more shielding role.

Aurelien who? Gravenberch has leapfrogged the Real Madrid midfielder as the best young holding midfielder in the game, and Liverpool are very lucky to have a footballer like him in their ranks.

CM Moises Caicedo, Chelsea

The Premier League is a better place with Moises Caicedo back to his best, as the former Brighton standout had a rather rancid 2023/24 campaign at the base of a Chelsea midfield that didn’t even seem to exist under Mauricio Pochettino.

Now, under Enzo Maresca, Caicedo is one of the foremost destroyers in world football again, picking up where he left off in Copa America as one of the standouts of the tournament for Ecuador.

By the end of the season, Enzo Fernandez will probably overtake Caicedo at the base of this midfield, because he has so much talent and has come around so strong this last month. But overall, Caicedo has been more consistent since the start of the season.

AM Cole Palmer Chelsea

A 2024/25 Premier League Team of the Season so far would feel incomplete without Cole Palmer spearheading the midfield and transitioning attacking opportunities for the the front three, just as he does better than anyone else in the top flight for Chelsea.

Palmer is still only 22 years of age and every bit as brilliant as he was last season in his breakout campaign. He has found the back of the net 12 times with 6 assists and a staggering average of nearly three key passes per game.

LW Son Heung-min, Tottenham

The basic goals and statistics don’t do justice to Son Heung-min, who is one of the most consistent attacking performers in the Premier League year over year and has really found his niche under Ange Postecoglou.

His statistics are less blinding this season outside the 9 role, but he can make more of an all-around impact as a creator and progressor on the wing, where he just edges out Luis Diaz due to his sheer importance to Tottenham.

ST Alexander Isak, Newcastle

With another stellar performance against Manchester United, Newcastle striker Alexander Isak has solidified himself as the new king of the position over a stagnating Erling Haaland, whose lack of all-around ability this season – just one assist – has been even more striking with his Manchester City teammates floundering.

Haaland hasn’t been bad, per se, and he is second in the Premier League with 14 goals. But while he has more goals than Isak, the Swedish international dwarfs his Norwegian counterpart everywhere else with 1.8 key passes and 1.4 dribbles per game.

Slowly but surely, Isak has blossomed into a more complete force at the striker position. He is as clinical as any striker besides Haaland in the Premier League and nearly as well-rounded as Solanke when looking at this season’s statistics.

RW Mohamed Salah, Liverpool

The Premier League Player of the Season so far, Mohamed Salah leads the English top flight in both goals and assists with 17 and 13, respectively, and the Egyptian international seems to make his numbers more unbelievably gaudy with each passing game.

Salah has the uncanny ability to save his biggest impact late in the game. The 32-year-old is playing the best football of his illustrious career here in 2024/25, and he seems to be hell-bent on a mission to prove that he is the greatest player in the history of the English Premier League.
