inhabiting the in-between
A 1950s-built extension designed by architect Rafael Masó has become a revitalized residence in Girona as 05 AM Arquitectura breathes new life into the historic Spanish city. This renovation, orchestrated by the Catalan architecture practice, embraces the essence of the past while seamlessly integrating the desires of contemporary living. Stepping into the house, guests are greeted by an existing annex, a small prism acting as the gateway to the main floor. A corridor acts as the connective element, establishing a dialogue between the old and the new while preserving an exterior courtyard between both spaces.

05 am arquitectura infuses girona home with gardens
The architects at 05 AM Arquitectura organize the renovated Girona residence with a strategic incision of two open patios, one flooded with southern sunlight and the other drawing light from the north. These in-between spaces, more than mere courtyards, become vibrant connectors. Bathed in natural light, they each lend a visual dialogues between different areas of the house. Here, gardens infuse the interiors with lush greenery, so that they stand as verdant bookends which offer pockets of calm amidst the living spaces and city beyond. The home thrives on fluidity. Defined by both connection and separation, the layout offers both intimate niches and wide-open areas, an atmosphere of openness enhanced by the flood of light.
