Players and officials of the Super Eagles were held hostage at the Al-Abaq Airport by Libyan authorities on Sunday night.

The team’s media officer, Promise Efoghe, claimed that their chartered aircraft was approaching its destination in Benghazi before it was diverted to another city, which is more than a two-hour drive from the original base.

The delegation had left Nigeria for the North African country on Sunday morning.

The Libyan players complained of poor treatment by Nigerian authorities on arrival in the West African country last week for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matchday three encounter.

Nasser Al-Hadiri’s side lost the encounter 1-0 with Fisayo Dele-Bashiru scoring the decisive goal four minutes from time.
